Born August 3, 1950, Chicago, Illinois is an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter.

His career began as a teenager at 20th Century Fox where he worked as a messenger. His first job in Hollywood was as an assistant director on MGM's on the set of Kelly's Heroes in Yugoslavia in 1969. He replaced the assistant director, who suffered from a nervous breakdown and was sent home. During filming, he met actors Don Rickles and Donald Sutherland, who later played in his own films. Since then, Landis has worked in many films made in Europe (especially in Italy and England), most notably Once Upon a Time in the Wild West, El Condor and A City Called Bastard. Landis also worked as a stunt double.

Upon his return to Hollywood for 60 thousand dollars, borrowed from parents and friends, he shot a parody horror film "Trash" ("Banana Monster") (1971, released in 1973). However, this tape, where Landis himself and his friends played, did not gain success, however, painfully hitting the pride of the young director.

But "Solyanka Kentucky", filmed 6 years later on the basis of the popular sketch show of the brothers Zucker and J. Abrahams according to their own script, brought Landis a huge financial success, collecting with a budget of 600,000 dollars, only at the national box office 15 million ... Landis became the leader of the new American comedy after the release a year later of the phenomenally successful youth "Menagerie" in the style of "National Mockingbird", the most popular comic magazine in those years, which decided to make its way into films and on TV. "Menagerie" became a cult film among the youth, still remaining one of the most financially successful comedies in Hollywood. It was subsequently listed on the National Register of American Films as a film of great cultural and social impact.

Landis turns into the leading comedian of the post-war generation "baby boom", he is called a spontaneous Hollywood postmodernist, who enthusiastically dissects well-known film stories - "The Adventures of Stray Musicians" ("The Blues Brothers", 1980), horror films ("American Werewolf in London" , 1981; video clip "Thriller", 1983), a comedy of mores ("Trading Places", 1983), Bond ("Spies Like Us", 1985), Westerns ("Three Amigos!", 1986). All these films were great success and were shot with the participation of the largest comedians of the time.

The postmodern game element of his work is very clearly visible in the film "In the Night" (1985), in which the director reinterprets and promotes the subgenre "the diamond theft thriller", mixing it with classic noir. Despite the fact that this film is filmed according to the familiar formula "yuppies in danger."

The box office comedy "A Trip to America" ??(1988) starring Eddie Murphy was a phenomenal success, but at the same time, it showed that with age, Landis began to gradually lose his desire for experimentation, gravitating towards more traditional comedic forms and even to family cinema. But since then commercial success has changed the director, as a result, he was forced to take on the shooting of remakes ("Oscar", 1991), sequels of strangers ("Beverly Hills Cop III", 1994) and his films ("Blues Brothers 2000", 1998).

Despite his persistent and consistent work in the cinema, the heights he took in the 70-80s. Landis never made it. His last directing work at the moment is the black comedy "Hands and feet for love", which also did not win box office success and critical praise, despite the participation of the popular British comedian Simon Pegg.
