Born October 15, 1957, Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India - American film director, producer, actress and screenwriter of Indian descent.
Graduated from the Faculty of Sociology of Delhi University, played in political street theater, in an amateur drama troupe. At the age of 19, she moved to the United States, continued her studies in her specialty at Harvard.
She shot several documentaries, one of them (Cabaret India, 1985) was seen by critics and was awarded several prizes. Her debut feature film Salam, Bombay (1988) brought her worldwide recognition.
