Born July 5, 1979, New Haven, Connecticut, USA - American film director, editor, producer, and screenwriter.
At the age of 10, Cahill was so enamored of cinema that he wanted to become a director. He bought his first camera at a pawnshop for $ 100 when he was still a schoolboy.
Cahill made his first film with a friend at the age of 17. It was the documentary "The Pocket" about DC go-go music.
After graduating from high school, Cahill studied medicine for several months and then studied economics at Georgetown University, graduating in 2001.
While at university, Cahill developed a close professional and friendly relationship with Brit Marling, whom he met at the Georgetown Film Festival. According to Cahill, along with another friend, also a student at Geogtown University and future film director Batmanglidge Hall, they formed a kind of film group. Cahill co-directed short films with Brit in which Brit played the main roles, after which he made documentaries for eight years, after which he offered to try to make a feature film.
During his senior year at Cahill University, he began an internship at National Geographic, soon becoming their youngest in-house field producer, editor and cameraman.
Cahill then moved to Los Angeles, where he was invited to edit two musical biopic films for the 2006 Sundance Film Festival - Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man (2005) about Leonard Cohen and Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out ”(2006) about The Police. Cahill also produced and directed several episodes of the documentary television series Truth of Life.
Popular science literature, in particular in the field of astronomy, had a great influence on Cahill's work.
In December 2009, Cahill decided to make his first full-length feature film, Another Earth, where he directed, co-wrote, produced, cinematographer and editor. The film was included in the competition program of the Sundance Film Festival in 2011, where it won the Special Jury Prize and the Alfred Sloan Prize, and immediately after the festival was purchased for distribution by Fox Searchlight.
In 2014 at the Sundance Film Festival, Cahill presented his new film, I Am the Beginning, which, like Another Earth, won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the festival.
