Born August 21, 1961, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, USA is an American screenwriter, producer, director and actor.

In 1987 he decided to look for success in animation, his second hobby. He has made several short films, two of which ("The Green Beret" and "Wormholes") have become popular at several film festivals and received various awards.

Joe Murray, the creator of Rocko's Modern Life, met Hillenburg at the cartoon festival and asked him if he would direct the show. Hillenburg agreed, becoming a screenwriter, producer, storyboarding director, and creative director. While working on the animated series, Hillenburg became friends with Tom Kenny, who would later become the voice of SpongeBob, as well as future co-authors of the series Doug Lawrence, Paul Tibbit and others.

In 1996, Hillenburg developed the idea for a new animated series about sea creatures. He focused on the sponge, which Hillenburg initially drew to look like a sea sponge, but changed its shape to a square one because it looked funnier. In 1997, Hillenburg teamed up with some of his colleagues in Rocco, who helped him work on the animated series. In 1998, Hillenburg transferred the rights to broadcast the first episode of Help Wanted to Nickelodeon.

The main character was originally called SpongeBoy, but since this name was copyrighted, Stephen replaced it with SpongeBob. Channel executives buy the animated series, and it begins airing in July 1999.

Hillenburg resigned after making the film. But at the same time, he did not leave the series, but became an executive producer.
