Born November 7, 1940, Antofagasta, Chile - Chilean writer, screenwriter, teacher, actor and director.
Studied at the National Institute of Chile, then studied philosophy at the University of Chile. He defended his dissertation on Jose Ortega y Gasset, studied the philosophy of existentialism. In 1964 he received a Fulbright scholarship, studied at Columbia University, defended his dissertation there on the novelism of Cortazar. I started to write. Returning to Chile, he headed the theater, taught philosophy and literature at the National Institute and the Chilean University, and worked on television. He made his debut in 1967 with a book of short stories.
Joined the Left Unified Popular Action Movement, which was part of the Popular Unity coalition. After the military coup in 1973 he emigrated, first to Argentina, then to the Federal Republic of Germany, where, among other things, he taught screenwriting at the German Academy of Film and Television in West Berlin. He returned to Chile in 1989. He founded the branch of the Goethe Institute in Chile and the Heinrich Boll literary workshop. Since 1992 he has hosted a literary program on television. In 2000-2003 he served as Chile's ambassador to Germany. He taught at US universities.
