July 4, 1910 - September 26, 2010 - American actress.
Gloria's father was of British roots and bore the Scottish royal surname, but Gloria, starting her acting career, changed the spelling of Stewart to Stuart, believing that the second option would look better on posters.
After college, Stewart worked at the Pasadena Theater, and in 1932 signed a contract with Universal Studios. In the same year, she became one of thirteen girls on the WAMPAS Baby Stars list. Director James Weil immediately noticed the charming blonde, and she immediately became his favorite. Stewart starred in his films Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933) and Kiss in Front of the Mirror (1933) .
But her career at Universal Studios developed at a slow pace, and Stewart moved on to 20th Century Fox. By the late 1930s, she had appeared in more than forty films, including Roman Scandals (1933) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938) .
In 1934, the actress married screenwriter Arthur Shikman. In 1935, their daughter Sylvia was born. During the Second World War, Stewart almost did not act in films. She got a job at the Decor Ltd. store, where she sold furniture, and in 1946 she even stated that she was tired of movies. She gave harsh refusals to all proposals for filming and in the end she was left alone. In 1954, while living in Rapallo on the Italian Riviera, she became interested in painting. The first display of her work took place at the prestigious Hammer Gallery in New York, and soon her works were already exhibited throughout Europe and the United States. In 1975, after a thirty-year hiatus, she resurrected her acting career by appearing in the television movie The Legend of Lizzie Borden, and over the next several years she regularly appeared in various television projects. Her comeback to the big screen was in 1982 in My Best Year starring Peter O'Toole.
Gloria Stewart achieved great popularity at the age of 87, playing the role of 100-year-old Rose Dewitt in James Cameron's "Titanic". For this role, the actress was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe, and was also awarded the Screen Actors Guild and the Saturn Prize. That same year, People magazine named Stewart among the 50 Most Attractive People in the World .
In 1999, the actress's autobiography I Only Keep Hope was published, and in 2000 the actress was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2001, Stewart appeared in a cameo role in the television movie Murder, She Wrote, and also played a small role in the drama The Million Dollar Hotel. She last appeared on the big screen in 2004 in Wim Wenders' film Land of Plenty. In recent years, the actress has no longer starred and only gave rare interviews for documentaries. In 2005, the actress was diagnosed with lung cancer, but despite this, she tried not to pay much attention to the serious illness. On June 21, 2010, on the eve of her centenary, Gloria Stewart received a Special Screen Actors Guild Award for her “limitless dedication to cinema”. On July 4 of the same year, the actress celebrated her centenary at the ACE art gallery in Beverly Hills. Among the guests were James Cameron with his wife Susie Amis, Frances Fisher, Shirley MacLaine and Tom Arnold. Gloria Stewart passed away from respiratory failure on September 26, 2010 at her home in Brentwood, California.
