Born August 6, 1970, Mahe, Pondicherry, India is an American screenwriter, director, producer and actor of Indian descent.

Shyamalan graduated from NYU Film School in 1992, where he was heavily influenced by Alfred Hitchcock's films.

In the same year in India, Shyamalan shot his first feature film, Furious Prayer.

In 1995, he wrote the script for the film "Stuart Little", which was acquired by Walt Disney Studios for $ 2.5 million (helped by Bruce Willis).

The 1999 thriller "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis became one of the most successful films of the year - it grossed over $ 600 million. Bruce Willis in this film agreed to a lower fee than usual.

The following year, Shyamalan released a new film with the same actor, Invincible (Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson).

In 2002, Night Shyamalan's highest-budget film Signs (starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix) was released, which was warmly received by most critics and the public.

In 2004, the film Mysterious Forest (2004) was released, nominated for the Empire Award for Best Director.

Until 2006, Night Shyamalan played only cameo roles in his films. In The Girl Out of the Water (2006), he played the role of the messiah writer who is called to save the world. The film received devastating reviews from critics and was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Director. As a result of this failure, the director was denied a lucrative contract for the right to direct the film "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

In July 2010, Night Shyamalan's film The Last Airbender was released. The plot is based on a fantasy world in which four races of the elements coexist - Water, Earth, Air and Fire. The Fire Nation is waging an incinerating war against other nations. The plot of the film is taken from the animated series "Avatar: The Legend of Aang". The film was crushed by critics, won 5 Golden Raspberry awards, including Worst Film.

In this period, only Shyamalan's low-budget screenwriting and production work, The Devil (2010), had box office success, which grossed nearly $ 60 million worldwide.

It was the low-budget work that allowed the director to return to success. The 2015 film "Visit" grossed nearly $ 100 million on a budget of five. For this work, Shyamalan received a nomination for the Golden Raspberry Award for Reputation Restoration.

The 2016 film Split grossed over $ 275 million on a budget of $ 9 million. The film became the third highest grossing film in a director's career, receiving generally positive reviews from critics and a nomination for Best Thriller at the Saturn Award.
