She has Maori, Welsh and European roots. Owen grew up in the small town of Moareva with a family of nine and converted to Catholicism in a small provincial town on the Bay of Islands on the North Island. She regularly performed in local Maori cultural groups, and at school she acted in drama and musicals. Owen wanted to become a doctor and spent 3.5 years studying to be a nurse at Oakland Hospital. After completing her nursing degree she moved to London.
In the mid-1980s, Owen studied at an acting school in London and also worked at the British Theater. She wrote and starred in Te Awa i Tahuti (River Runaway), which was a success in London and was published in 1991 by the New Zealand organization Playmarket.
After returning to New Zealand in 1989, Owen starred in two TV series on E Tipu E Rea. She also worked a lot in the theater: she played, wrote plays, was a director, playwright and one of the founders of Taki Rua Theater.
In the US, Owen starred in George Lucas's Star Wars. Episode II: Attack of the Clones "and" Star Wars. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. "
