Born December 10, 1974, Detroit is an American drummer best known for The White Stripes.
In the early 1990s, Meg met aspiring musician John "Jack" Anthony Gillis while bartending at Memphis Smoke in a Detroit suburb. They got married on September 21, 1996. John, a supporter of unorthodox fashion, decided to take his wife's name. In the same year, Meg sat down at the drum kit for the first time. She never intended to perform professionally on stage. According to Jack, he just asked Meg to play along during a rehearsal one day, and it sounded unexpectedly good.
Jack and Meg divorced on March 24, 2000.
The White Stripes were forced to cancel 18 shows on their tour on September 11, 2007 because Meg had a panic attack. Her health problems also forced her to cancel her UK tour, but in June 2008 the recovered drummer appeared on stage at a concert in Detroit with The Raconteurs.
On May 3, 2009, rumors of Meg's engagement to Jackson Smith, the son of Fred Smith and Patti Smith, were officially confirmed. The couple got married on May 22, 2009. The wedding took place in Nashville, Tennessee, in Jack's backyard.
