Born June 1, 1947 - British musician of Gypsy ("water gypsies") descent.
Wood began his career as a professional musician in 1964 as the guitarist for the London R&B group The Birds (not to be confused with the American band The Byrds). The group's concerts were attended by a large number of fans, but the group released only a few singles in the mid-60s; Wood was the author or co-writer of about half of the band's recorded songs. In 1967, The Birds disbanded and Wood joined The Jeff Beck Group as bassist. Together with vocalist Rod Stuart, Wood played several tours with Beck and participated in the recording of two albums: "Truth" and "Beck-Ola", released in 1968 and 1969, respectively. Simultaneously with the Jeff Beck Group, Wood played with The Creation.
In 1969, when Steve Marriott left The Small Faces, Wood began playing with the remaining band members, returning to his primary instrument, the guitar. This line-up, along with Rod Stewart and former The Birds member Kim Gardner, teamed up with Ron Wood's brother, Art Wood, to become Quiet Melon, and made several recordings in May 1969. In July, following the end of the Jeff Beck Group's fifth US tour, Wood and Stewart fully focused on working with the former Small Faces, and the new group was named The Faces.
In 1974, after the final concert of The Faces, Wood joined the Rolling Stones, while Stewart pursued a solo career.
