Graduated from Bell High School, studied acting at a theater studio in Ottawa.
On TV since 1980, his debut on the big screen took place in 1981 - Sonya Smits played the role of Mrs. Lind in Lew Lehman's action film "The Pit".
Sonia Smits is a founding member of the ACTRA Women's Council and a longtime supporter of Women's Legal Education and Activities Foundation (LEAF), a Canadian women's organization.
