In 2005, Washington was cast as the gifted heart surgeon Dr. Preston Burke in the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy. This role earned him two National Progress Association Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award. On the series, he was paired with actress Sandra Oh, who plays intern Dr. Christina Young. Washington originally auditioned for the role of Dr. Derek Shepard, however, Patrick Dempsey eventually took over the role of Dr. Shepard. Burke was originally described as a 40-year-old fat man. For playing the role of Dr. Burke, Isaiah was included in the list of Sexiest Men by TV Guide magazine in June 2006 and was named one of the sexiest doctors on TV in June 2008 by the TV Guide of the same name.
