Born 7 March 1952 in Accra, Ghana is a Scottish screenwriter, producer and director.

Boyd graduated from Gordonstone School in Scotland, then went to France, where he entered the University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis, then studied at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) and at Oxford College of Jesus (England).

From 1980 to 1983, he lectured at St Hilda's College, Oxford, but after the publication of his first three stories, Boyd realized that he could feed himself without a scientific and teaching activity, and completely immersed himself in literature.

In 1981, Boyd's first book, The Good Man in Africa, was published, which became a bestseller, and in 1994 a film of the same name was made based on it.

In 1998, another book by Boyd, "Nat Tate: American Artist 1928-1960", was published, which tells about the New York abstract expressionist painter. Many people read this book as a real biographical narrative, since the author did not indicate that everything written here is his fiction, and famous people who knew the truth, for example David Bowie, jokingly confirmed their personal acquaintance with Nat Tate. When the truth was revealed, Boyd clarified that the name of the artist he had invented was a reference to the London National Gallery and the Tate Gallery. Boyd drew illustrations for the book, "Tate's paintings" on his own, since before the beginning of his literary career he thought to become an artist, "Tate's photograph" is an unknown man from Boyd's personal photo collection.

In 2005 Boyd became Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

In 2014, Boyd was one of more than 200 public figures to sign a letter to The Guardian against Scotland's secession from Britain ahead of the upcoming referendum.
