Born 1967, Wellington, New Zealand is a New Zealand film director, screenwriter and producer.

Graduated from the University of Auckland School of Art with a BA and received an MA from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne.

For the first time, Karo showed herself as a director, filming small advertising projects. In 1994, Niki released her first film, the short film Sure to Rise. In it, she acted not only as a director, but also as a screenwriter. This work was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The melodrama Memory & Desire, released in 1997, was Nicky Caro's first full-length film. This film was nominated for a prize at the Stockholm Film Festival, and in New Zealand, Niki Caro won the Film and TV Awards. Over the next five years, Karo became the author of two more projects - the horror film Dark Stories: Tales from Beyond the Grave, and the television series Mercy Peak, which ran on New Zealand television for three seasons.

Niki Caro became world famous in 2002 with the drama Rider the Whale. An original and touching film about the Maori people losing their distinctive culture in the modern world, it turned out to be extremely entertaining. Niki Caro has received awards from several film festivals, including Sundance and the Toronto Festival.

Karo directed the next film, the drama North Country, in 2005. The picture did not repeat the success of the previous film. In 2009 the drama "The Luck of the Winemaker" was released.
