October 23, 1942, Chicago, USA - November 4, 2008, Los Angeles, USA - American science fiction writer, screenwriter and film director, producer, widely known for his works in the genres of science fiction, medical fiction and thriller.

Studied at Roslin High School, where he played successfully on the basketball team thanks to his growth. I always planned to become a writer, so since 1960 he has been studying at the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) at the Faculty of Philology. However, his style was constantly criticized by professors, and his grades were usually low. One day, as his work, he presented one of George Orwell's essays. The professor for this "work" gave Crichton a plus, and after that the future writer realized that Harvard standards were not for him.

In 1964, after graduating from university with average grades, he decided to change his field of interest and study anthropology in Cambridge (UK). In this field, success exceeded all expectations, for success in his studies in 1965 he was awarded a one-year trip to Europe and North Africa. Back in the United States, Crichton again changes his area of ??interest. This time he intends to become a doctor, defended his dissertation in medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1969, worked for a short time at the Jonas Salk Institute for Biological Research in La Jolla (California), but did not receive private practice, so even during his studies in medical school begins to write.

According to the author himself, at this time (1977) his height was about 2 meters 6 centimeters, so his pseudonyms were John Lange and Jeffrey Hudson. Lange is a German surname meaning "long", Sir Geoffrey Hudson is a dwarf known in the 17th century. In Travels, Crichton recalls an overheard conversation between two unknown doctors who discussed mistakes in The Andromeda Strain while he remained anonymous at medical school. He co-authored Dealing with his younger brother Douglas, published under the general pseudonym Michael Douglas, and featured a photograph of Michael and Douglas at a very early age taken by their mother on the back cover of the book.

Michael Crichton sold his first work, travel sketches, to the New York Times at the age of 14. He tried writing more seriously at the Faculty of Philology, and in the mid-1960s, to pay for his studies, he began writing police novels, published under the pseudonyms Jeffrey Hudson and John Lange. One of these novels, When Needed, won the prestigious Edgar Detective Writers' Award in 1968. And another book becomes Crichton's first science fiction book: I mean the novel "Selective Remedy" (1968), which is a classic science fiction detective story. The success of Crichton was brought by the first book signed with his own name - the science fiction novel The Andromeda Strain (1969), which was filmed two years later.

In the early 1970s, he switched to a career as a screenwriter and then a director, and his fifth film, Westworld, is gaining some success. In this picture, people of the future spend their holidays in a giant park like Disneyland, where all the past eras are reproduced, but instead of people - robots that are no different from them. And now one of the cowboys-robots breaks down and begins to hunt for a man. The confrontation between a robot and a human is the main plot of the film. In addition, in this tape, Crichton was one of the first to use image digitization to obtain special effects.

But Crichton gained worldwide fame in 1993, when a blockbuster based on the novel of the same name "Jurassic Park" appeared on the screens. This film adaptation spurred readers' interest in the writer's old works, and in 1993 "Park" itself was on the bestseller lists in the USA for almost a year, its total circulation in the USA is approaching 7 million copies. In the same year, Crichton was named the most popular writer in the United States. By early 1998, he was the fourth richest person in the entertainment industry ($ 102 million). To date, the circulation of his books around the world exceeds 100 million copies.

In addition, one of the most successful American television series, Ambulance, was directed by Michael Crichton and won 14 Emmy Awards, the highest award in television. Crichton was the head of the software company FilmTrack, and in the late 1990s he founded Timeline Studios, which made computer games based on the plots of his own novels. The writer himself admitted that for almost two decades he fanatically loved this type of entertainment, and this could not but affect his work.
