October 13, 1891 - April 22, 1988 - American actress.
At the age of eighteen, she married Elv Elcourt Deffenbach, from whom in 1910 she gave birth to a daughter, Frances Rich, who would later become an actress and sculptor. After two years of marriage, the couple broke up, and a year later she married US Army Lieutenant Charles Rich, who became the father of her second daughter. This marriage also turned out to be unsuccessful, and in 1916 the couple separated.
After the divorce, Rich, left with two daughters, worked in the real estate industry, and in 1918 she got to Hollywood, where she began to appear in extras on the big screen.
In the early 1930s, she was already offered larger roles in such films as Water, Water, Everywhere (1920), Roads of Despair (1921), Rosita (1923), Eve's Beloved (1925) , Lady Windermere's Fan (1925) and Beware of Married Men (1938). Since the beginning of the talkie era, Rich moved to a supporting role, appearing in such films as The Champion (1931), The Same Age (1938), The Mortal Storm (1940), The Angel and the Scoundrel (1947), Fort Apache (1948) and Jeanne d'Arc (1948). In the 1930s, the actress also worked extensively on radio and played on the stage.
After completing her acting career in 1950, Rich, along with her fourth husband, retired to a ranch near Santa Barbara, where she spent the rest of her life. Irene Rich died of heart failure in April 1988 at the age of 96. The actress was awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to film and radio.
