Graduated from the Faculty of Education of the University of Urbino. He began to write in a Nazi concentration camp.
Since 1953, Tonino Guerra has been writing screenplays for films that have entered the golden fund of world cinema classics.
In the second half of the 1970s, Antonioni and Guerra discussed with the USSR State Committee for Cinematography the possibility of filming a full-length fairy tale film “The Kite” on the territory of one of the Soviet Central Asian republics, most likely in Uzbekistan. They came to choose a nature, but as a result, the project remained unrealized.
The first joint project with the famous Russian animator Andrei Khrzhanovsky was "The Lion with a Gray Beard", which had incredible success with Western audiences and critics, and received many festival awards.
In Santarcangelo di Romagna, in honor of his friend Federico Fellini, he opened the La Sangiovesa restaurant, which he decorated with his drawings. On the walls of city houses, the poet hung ceramic tablets with philosophical sayings, which he collected all his life. Tonino Guerra's poems were translated into Russian by his close friend Bella Akhmadulina.
