Born May 26, 1961, Jalandhar, Punjab, India is an Indian American filmmaker who has become famous for his music videos and commercials.

Studied at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, then at Delhi University. At 24, he moved to the United States.

Tarsem graduated from art college in Pasadena, California. He began his career as a director in the 1990s as a music video director. His most famous video clips include Hold On (En Vogue), Sweet Lullaby (Deep Forest) and others. Most successful was the video for REM's Losing My Religion, which won six nominations at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards. The style of this video, according to the director, was largely influenced by the images of Caravaggio's paintings and Tarkovsky's films.

Tarsem then turned to advertising (which he is currently shooting). In total, he has dozens of commercials for such famous brands as Nike, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Motorola, Levi's and others.

Debut as a filmmaker in 2000's The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez; This film, which follows a female psychologist's journey through the subconscious of a serial killer, uses the style of the Losing My Religion video in part.

Tarsem has been directing his second film, Outland, for several years, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2006; only in 2008 was it released on DVD and was shown in limited distribution in several countries. Here he also acted as a screenwriter and producer in order to fully embody his vision of the film (on which he began work 17 years ago). At the same time, the plot was based on Valeri Petrov's script for the Bulgarian film Yo-ho-ho (1981) directed by Zako Heskia. Outland has been filmed in 24 countries.

Was one of the candidates to direct the film "Constantine: Lord of Darkness" (2005). Acted as director of the second group on the filming of scenes in India and Cambodia for the film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (2008).

Tarsem's third full-length film was "War of the Gods: Immortals" based on ancient Greek myths dedicated to the exploits of Theseus; where Tarsem turned to trendy 3D technology. The film premiered in November 2011.
