Film debut took place in 1938. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. Among his works - the leading roles in the noirs "Assassins" (1946), "Dead on Arrival" (1950) and "The Hitcher" (1953), supporting roles in the westerns "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) and "Wild gang "(1969), the political thriller" Seven Days in May "(1964).
