April 9, 1933 - December 6, 1994 - Italian actor and screenwriter.
Gian Maria Volonte has been acting in films since 1960. Fame brought him the spaghetti westerns Sergio Leone and Mario Monicelli's comedy "Army of Brancaleone" (the only comic role of the actor). However, in the future, Volonte was offered mainly serious dramatic roles. The name of Volonte, a member of the ICP, is inextricably linked with the heyday of Italian political cinema in the late 1960s and 1970s. He starred with the leading masters of this direction: Damiano Damiani, Francesco Rosi, Giuliano Montaldo, Giuseppe Ferrara, Elio Petri, Carlo Lizani. Volonte's most significant accomplishments include the role of an unnamed police inspector (Doctor) in Petri's film Investigation of a Citizen's Case Beyond Any Suspicion, which has been repeatedly recognized as the strongest in the artist's career.
In France, Volonte also starred in one of the films of the anarchist "Dziga Vertov Group", whose leader was Jean-Luc Godard. There is a legend that on the set of the film “Wind from the East” Jean-Luc Godard repeatedly approached Volonte with the question: “Who did more to destroy the System - Stalin or Mao?”, To which the actor invariably answered: “Harlequin!” Gruvemuvestart Gian Maria Volonte very carefully approached the selection of roles, based primarily on his civic position. For example, he refused to participate in such recognized masterpieces of world cinema as "The Godfather" by Coppola and "The Twentieth Century" by Bertolucci, opting for an acutely social film by the Chilean director Miguel Littin, who was forced to live abroad during the reign of Pinochet.
For these reasons, Volonte never played the role of Casanova in the famous film by Fellini, although the director had such a plan. But he happened to play other celebrities: Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Giordano Bruno, Pestalozzi, Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Aldo Moro.
