Born January 11, 1971, Yonkers, New York is an American R&B, soul and hip-hop singer, songwriter, record producer and actress.
Blige began to storm the charts in 1991 and 1992 with hip-hop soul music produced for her by Puff Daddy. Subsequently, it evolved towards a more mainstream soul. The greatest success of the 1990s was for her the track "Not Gon 'Cry" written by Babeface, which was included in the soundtrack and sounded in the film "Waiting to Exhale" with Whitney Houston in the title role. In 1999, the singer sang a duet with George Michael on the song "As" by Stevie Wonder. This single was featured on George Michael's compilation Ladies & Gentlemen.
In 2001, Mary J reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in her career with the single "Family Affair", produced by Dr. Dre.
In 2005, U2 invited Mary J. to their concert in New York, where she sang the song “One” with the group. Later, a studio recording was made, where Mary performed the lead vocal part, Bono performed the additional part, and the group performed the instrumental parts. The recording was included in the tracklist of The Breakthrough, which was released in the same 2005 and became multi-platinum.
In 2012, she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Song category for The Living Proof for The Servant.
In 2017 she played a supporting role in the film Farm "Mudbound". For her, she received nominations for the "Sputnik", "Golden Globe" and "Oscar" awards for Best Supporting Actress. For the song Mighty River, written for this film, she received nominations for the Golden Globe and Oscars.
