At the age of 16, he became interested in photography, cinema, acting and theater, directed the productions of works by Luigi Pirandello and Eduardo De Filippo, shot dozens of short documentaries. This is how creative work on television began in 1979.

In 1984 Giuseppe Tornatore collaborated with Giuseppe Ferrara. Together, they made a film about one of the most notorious cities in Sicily - Palermo. “One Hundred Days in Palermo” (“Cento giorni a Palermo”), where Tornatore produced, co-written and directed.

In 1986, Giuseppe Tornatore creates his first full-length film based on the novel by Giuseppe Marazzo "Il Comorrista", "Camorrist" and receives the "silver prize" "Nastro d'Argento", the Italian "Golden Globe" for the best young director and the Silver ribbon of the National Syndicate of Italian Film Journalists for Best Director.

Franco Cristaldi, who produced Fellini's work after watching the first Torantore film, decided to help the aspiring director create the next labor-intensive feature work.

This decision led to the creation of Nuovo Cinema Paradiso in 1988, the second feature film about the successful director Salvatore Di Vita, who returns from Rome to his homeland of Palermo to attend the funeral of his mentor. Tornatore created the image of a hero, realizing dissatisfaction with his life, despite his wealth and fame, who goes to the house where he spent his youth in order to find answers to the questions that tormented him all his life. The film was released worldwide in a shortened version - from the initial 155 minutes left 123.

Since 1990, Giuseppe Tornatore has been involved in the Philip Morris project, whose mission is the restoration of classic Italian films. Also at this time, Torantore was lecturing on a course in aesthetics at the University of Palermo.

In 1990, the film “Everyone is fine” (“Stanno tutti bene”) was released, which tells the story of a man from Sicily, looking for his sons throughout Italy. In the role of father - Marcello Mastroianni, for whom it was one of the last roles.

In 1995 Giuseppe Tornatore returned to the documentary genre and to the image of his beloved Sicily. The film “Shield and Three Swords” (“Lo schermo e tre punte”) is compiled from over 500 separate excerpts from 100 different films about Sicily. This work turned out to be a cinematic anthology about the history of Sicily, divided into 14 chapters.

In 1996, Tornatore again won an Oscar for the painting “Man from the Stars” (“L'Uomo delle stelle”). The plot is set in Sicily 1953. The main character is Joe Morelli, posing as an employee of the Cinematographic Institute of Rome. He promises money and fame to people all over Sicily. Joe charges 1,500 lire for samples, after which, according to the promise, people will surely get into the unattainable world of cinema. A major emphasis in the film on the degradation and poverty of the Sicilian peasants.
