Born September 10, 1933 (according to his own statement, September 1938), Hamburg, Germany - German fashion designer, photographer.
He has German roots on his mother's side and Swedish on his father's side. There are no siblings - he is the last child in the last marriage of his parents.
In 1952 he moved to Paris, where he studied at a school under the High Fashion Syndicate. In 1955 he won the 1st prize for coat design in a competition organized by the International Wool Secretariat. Then he became an assistant to Pierre Balmain, with whom he worked until 1958.
In 1959, Lagerfeld was invited to the Jean Patou fashion house, where he received the position of art director. Here he works until 1963. Since 1963, he began to work simultaneously with four fashion houses - Chloe, Krizia, Charles Jourdan and Fendi, creating completely different collections for each.
In 1974 Lagerfeld founded his own line - Karl Lagerfeld Impression. In 1979 he received an invitation to teach at the Vienna School of Applied Arts as a professor.
In 1983 he became Artistic Director of Chanel, where he first worked on the creation of ready-to-wear collections. Founded the KL and KL lines by Karl Lagerfeld.
Since 1987 he took up photography, published several books. In 1987-1995 he collaborated with a large German clothing manufacturer Klaus Steilman. In 1992-1997 he again held the position of chief fashion designer at Chloe.
In 1998 he opened an art gallery in Paris called Lagerfeld Gallery - Studio 7L.
Lagerfeld is a great book lover, owns a personal library of 300 thousand volumes. In 2000, he founded his own publishing house in Paris called 7L and opened a bookstore of the same name. In the same year, he sold part of his collection of books on 18th century French art at Christie's.
The fashion designer is also known as a perfume creator. He created fragrances Chloe (1975), KL (1982), Jako (1997), as well as a book scent.
