Japan is a British band formed in 1974 in Lewish, UK. The line-up included Rob Dean (b. 23 April 1955, guitar), Richard Barbieri (b. 30 November 1957, keyboards), David Sylvian (b. 23 February 1958, vocals, guitar), Mick Karn (Andonis Mikaelides, p. 24 July 1958, bass) and David's brother Steve Jansen (Steve Butt, b. 1 December 1959, drums). At first, Japan performed glam rock, in tune with the music of David Bowie, the New York Dolls and Roxy Music - a group with which they were often compared, but gradually moving closer to the movement of the "new romantics", they created their own kind of "stylish synth-pop" with funky elements -rock, becoming one of the most exciting and successful bands of its time. In 1977, the team won the Hansa Records Music Competition, which resulted in their first contract.
