The Beatniks, or Beat Generation, were a group of writers and poets from the 1950s and 1960s who were distinguished by their unique views of traditional morality and generally accepted social values. For Laurence Lipton, this was the second marriage that fell apart when James was a child. Growing up, James Lipton began to accuse his father's unconventional and anarchic lifestyle of his parents' divorce, and he himself decided to take a different path. He chose a stable and well-respected career as a lawyer and went to study in New York. There, James Lipton realized that after all, in spite of everything, he wants to connect his life with theater and cinema. For 12 years, James Lipton studied acting and directing under Stella Adler, one of America's most renowned drama teachers. At one time such famous actors as Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro studied with Adler. James Lipton also studied public speaking, contemporary dance, jazz and classical ballet at New York University and The New School. In the mid-1990s, he had the idea to create a three-year student acting program based on what he himself had studied over 12 years. In 1994, he set up an acting studio at New York City's New School University. In the same year, James Lipton created special classes to which he invited established actors who answered questions from students. These sessions were recorded and then broadcast on television under the title "Inside the Actors Studio". The show soon became so popular that it was quoted and parodied in many TV films and programs. Thanks to the program "Guest in the Actors' Studio", James Lipton gained fame and recognition among millions of Americans and residents of other countries.
Despite his age, James Lipton continues to host and produce Guest in the Actors' Studio. He has also released a book and a film about what goes on behind the scenes of the show. James Lipton has consistently remained one of America's most beloved and respected television personalities.
