Born November 9, 1948, Breda, Lyngby-Torbek, Denmark - Danish director, screenwriter, cameraman and actor.
Graduated from two film schools - in Stockholm (1971) and Copenhagen (1973). He began working in cinema as a cameraman in the late 1970s. He directed his first film "Honeymoon" in 1978 and immediately received the Danish national film award "Bodil" in the category "Best Danish Film". After that he directed several more films as a cameraman and directed the TV movie Maj. In 1983 and 1984 he directed two films based on the works of the Danish writer Bjarne Reuter - Zappa (1983) and Buster's World (1984).
In 1987, August's film "Pelle the Conqueror" based on the novel by Martin Andersen-Nexe was shown in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival and received the main prize - "Palme d'Or". Later, the same film received an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The Cannes success was repeated in 1992 when August's film Good Intentions was awarded the Palme d'Or. Thus, Bille August became the third (after Alf Schoberg and Francis Ford Coppola) director to receive the main prize of the Cannes festival twice (after August this achievement was repeated by Emir Kusturica, Shohei Imamura, the Dardenne brothers and Michael Haneke).
After that August went to Hollywood, but none of his films there were as successful as the early films. However, he has directed films such as Les Miserables (1998, adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel) and Goodbye Bafana (2007). On September 23, 2011, he announced that he had opened his film studio in Hangzhou, PRC.
